It’s not until you become sexually active or are 21 years old–whichever comes first–that your gynecologist will conduct gynecological exams, including a pelvic exam. If you’re wondering what to expect at your first gynecological exam, below are some examples of what’s generally included.
Intake and Discussion
Your exam will begin when your healthcare team collects intake information like height, weight, and blood pressure. They may also ask you some general questions about your health and ask for a urine sample. When your gynecologist arrives, you’ll have an opportunity to discuss any concerns you may be having.
Breast Exam
The doctor may also give you a breast exam and show you how to do a breast self-exam. Most teens and young adults are at a low risk for breast cancer, but it’s a good idea to get used to breast exams. It’s also important to learn how to do your own breast exam so you can check periodically between appointments. Knowing what’s normal for your body can help you identify when something changes.
Pelvic Exam
Finally, your gynecologist may perform a pelvic exam. During the pelvic exam, the doctor will examine your vaginal area and examine your cervix. They’ll check for abnormalities and perform a pap smear, which is a test that collects a small sample of cells to check the health of your cervix.
Our gynecologists will take the time to walk you through the entire exam, ensuring you feel at ease and comfortable throughout the process.
